Shamshera Movie Review: Movie Plot

The movie is based on the British Rule era of India. It starts in the year 1896 in India where Balli (Ranbir Kapoor) is a tribesman who wants to become a police officer. The test is taken by Daroga Shudh Singh (Sanjay Dutt). There Balli learns about the past of his father Shamshera.

Then the timeline moves back to 1871 when Shamshera was oppressed by Kaza based on caste discrimination. To rise and take revenge, Shamshera starts pillaging the wealthy people of Kaza. To drive away the tribe, the kingdom of Kaza takes help from the British who agree to help in exchange for 5000 gold coins.

The tribe and Shamshera fight with all their might and succeed in defeating the British. But they are captured due to a trap laid by Daroga Shudh Singh. The tribe try to make their escape but Shamshera is captured and Shudh Singh hangs him ultimately killing him.

When Balli learns about the truth, he fakes his death and escapes from the fortress and pledges to take revenge on Shudh Singh. When Shamshera and other tribesmen were captured, some of them stayed and were hiding in the village Nagina. With the help of his allies Pir Baba and a local dancer Sona, Balli loots the gold from Shudh Singh’s wedding but one of his allies gets captured.

The British General who was at the wedding is worried about the new Shamshera. With the knowledge gained from the captured enemy, they find all the gold looted by Balli and find Sona who is pregnant with Balli’s child. Shudh Singh tries to kill both Sona and her child but the General stops him. The Queen’s crown was supposed to pass through Kaza but is stolen by Balli. He makes a deal with the General for the crown in exchange for the captured tribesmen.

The General agrees but Shudh Singh kills all the British forces and blames Balli for the same. Shudh Singh takes the credit for getting the Queen’s crown back. When the tribe gets to know about the sacrifices made by Shamshera for them, they all follow Balli and kill the whole police force. Balli faces Shudh Singh and ends up hanging him in the same way Shudh Singh hung his father.

Balli returns the crown to the General as he saved Sona and his child from Shudh Singh. With this, the whole tribe rides off and hopes to live their lives peacefully.

Bottom Line

If you have not seen Shamshera, we recommend watching it once. Although it may have not done well at the box office still, it is a good movie that could be watched once. The performance and characters portrayed by Ranbir Kapoor and Sanjay Dutt are commendable.
